Blackout in Naples, the ‘Ospedale del Mare’ keeps running thanks to the Onis Visa gensets
When the power goes out, a city comes to a standstill. This is exactly what happened in Naples on April 10, due to a major blackout caused by a failure in the high-voltage power grid, which left entire neighborhoods across the city and surrounding areas without electricity, disrupting businesses, homes, and essential services.
Among the facilities affected was the Ospedale del Mare, one of the most critical sites in emergency situations. The issue was managed promptly and effectively thanks to the activation of emergency generators.
It was not luck. It was planning. Careful planning, developed also through collaboration with Visa SpA, the supplier of the generating sets. At the core was a robust configuration designed to handle all critical scenarios: 6 units of 1500 kVA gensets supported by 2 x 400 kVA units, ensuring power, redundancy and operational continuity under any circumstances.
Within seconds, the machines came into operation and power was restored to the most critical areas—operating rooms, the emergency department, and elevators—preventing any impact on patients, ongoing procedures, and essential services. Thanks to their immediate response capability, Visa systems ensured stability, power and redundancy even in such a complex situation, demonstrating how essential it is to rely on highly dependable and fully integrated solutions.
After the complete restart of the systems, within approximately 15 minutes, the entire facility returned to 100% full operational capacity.
