ASCO TLC SERVER FARM, ITALY - Onis Visa Generating Sets to ensure the highest level of security

ASCO TLC Server Farm , Italy

ASCO TLC, one of the most important Italian regional telco operator specialized in granting innovative solutions in the world of information technology, has recently inaugurated in Santa Lucia di Piave (TV) the most advanced Web Farm, certified according to the specifications of TIER 3 established by Uptime Institute (TIER 3 means: availability: 99.982%. 1.6 hours of interruption/year. Redundancy N+1). It is undoubtedly a strategic investment, provided with the highest certified international standards presently available both for institutions and companies.
For this project ASCO TLC specifically needed a solution to grant total safety in the disaster prevention to help avoid potential risky situations that could undermine the operating system, relying on high quality products and engineering expertise.
Two units of Onis Visa generating sets have been specifically designed for this purpose, protecting the electrical plant that needs to count on extremely reliable and uninterrupted power supply, vital aspect to protect the huge amount of stored data information. Beside that also the specific climate inside the data centre, including conditioning and proper ventilation for the storage devices, are protected by the same emergency backup generators, operating automatically in case of power failure, thus preventing any loss of data or functionality.

CASE HISTORY

DATA DESCRIPTION
Project: SERVER FARM ASCO TLC
Location: Santa Lucia di Piave (TV), Italy
Power required: 500.0 kVA (550.0 kVA Stand-by power)
Power installed: 500.0 kVA (550.0 kVA Stand-by power)
Generator sets: 2 x P 251GX Special version
Dimensions: 1140 x 3500 x 2250 mm  (W x L x H)

Special configuration:

Supply pumping and filtering system to the on-board fuel tank through 2 pumps, one acting as a back up to the other. 2 units of underground tanks of 3000 Litres each one, complete with leakage warning system and electronic fuel gauge.

Technical specifications:

Generating sets equipped with Perkins engine, Marelli alternator and Onis Visa Guard Touch control panel.

Control Unit:

Onis Visa innovative control panel Guard Touch, researched and developed directly by Visa SpA, monitors and controls the generating set while the control of Mains failure, and the signal that gets the gensets started, is arranged by the Data centre’s control system. The panel with control logic, in fact, perfectly interacts with the Web Farm’s Building Automation System (BAS).

Project’s aims:

This project needed an extremely reliable and technically advanced product able to ensure a high level of performance and having a compact structure. Beside the product in itself however, also specific engineering assistance were highly required to be applied in different aspects of the project. One of them was the control logic, considered extremely important for the interaction with the customer’s own system.

Purpose:

The Data Center of Asco TLC, one of the main regional Italian telco operator dealing in the information technology, required 550.0 kVA stand-by power supply. The aim: to prevent any loss of data and/or functionality of the databases to ensure the highest level of security. After analyzing the specific requirements, Visa SpA engineering team involved in the project chose to supply 2 units of model P 251 GX SP. The gensets are designed to simultaneously start, through a remote signal, in the event of a power failure. The first one receives the load and then the second machine stops becoming available to act as a back-up to the other. Each genset supplies 275.0 kVA of standby.

What Visa SpA provided:

Visa SpA not only supplied the generating sets, but also supported ASCO TLC’s technical staff by offering its consultancy regarding the exhaust expulsion system, built by them. Furthermore, specific components referring to the canopy have been designed and applied to grant an even higher level of noise reduction. A specific fuel filtering system has been properly developed to be activated during the refueling operations of the on-board tank, consisting of a double filter for water and impurities, two fuel pumps, one of which acting as back-up of the other, and a control panel able to interface with the Guard Touch control device. In that way the whole system guarantees that the genset’s fueltank is always at level and it reduces the risk of failure in starting the generating sets due to any contaminated fuel. Visa SpA is the Italian main manufacturer of generating sets, that has been present in the market for more than 50 years combining its global experience with engineering expertise to provide, beside the gensets, also the complete support the customer may need to design the most profitable and appropriate technical and economic solutions, in accordance with the quality and environmental management system procedures. It grants the highest reliability which is a fundamental requirement in every installation, particularly when dealing with complex systems as the one recently inaugurated by ASCO TLC in its new Advanced Farm Server installation in Santa Lucia di Piave (TV).
