Visa new acoustic engineering solutions delivering high-perfomance technology

With a view to collaborating with leading international engine manufacturers, Visa has recently completed an ambitious joint development project with Volvo, a globally recognized reference in the production of industrial diesel engines, aimed at developing high-performance solutions.

A project was launched to design and manufacture a Volvo-powered generating set, equipped with special features and accessories compliant with the latest and most stringent European environmental regulations, intended for deployment in the rental market—a highly demanding sector where quality and performance must consistently meet the highest standards.

This collaboration led to the development of the Visa prototype V405GXVM, equipped with the Volvo TAD 1382GE Stage V engine, destined for a major European company operating in the rental sector.

The objective was to design and manufacture a high-performance Stage V genset for a sector that requires full compliance with strict EU regulations, reduced emissions and a newly engineered canopy featuring innovative solutions in terms of soundproofing and thermal insulation, while ensuring high operational reliability in often extremely harsh environments. At the same time, priority was given to ease of handling and maintenance, as well as compatibility with renewable fuels.

This goal was achieved through the development of the prototype by our engineering team, which worked in close cooperation with the Volvo team at Visa’s state-of-the-art production facilities, combining expertise and technical know-how from both companies, ultimately leading to the certification of the final product. This joint effort resulted in product validation and the significant achievement of certification in accordance with Directive 2000/14/EC for environmental noise emissions.

Production of the first 6 units has been completed, with recent delivery to a leading European company in the rental sector, while a further production batch is currently underway, part of which will be integrated into Visa’s rental fleet.

CASE HISTORY

Project:                                    Prototype equipped with the newly designed canopy for rental sector
Location:                                  Rental sector in Europe
Installed power:                     400 kVA (P.R.P:)
Gensets supplied:                   1 unit mod. V 405 GXVM special version -  P.R.P. Continous power kVA 400, E.P. Stand-by power kVA 440

Purpose:

To develop an innovative product that meets the requirements of robustness and lightweight design, specifically suited for the rental sector and fully compliant with the most stringent European emissions regulations. The aim was to create a prototype capable not only of meeting current market needs but also of setting future performance standards.

Special configuration:

Considering the type of application and the specific requirements of the rental sector, a special genset configuration was developed, featuring an extremely soundproofed enclosure with rock wool insulation.

Technical features:
The generating set is equipped with Volvo  engine, model TAD1382GE Stage V. This special engine, manufactured by Volvo and supplied to Visa for installation on the generator, is renowned for its operational stability and low noise levels thanks also to the special configuration with electronically controlled fan. It offers high reliability, low fuel consumption, and a flexible Exhaust After-Treatment System (EATS) to facilitate installation.

Volvo engine

The engine is complete with engine water pre-heater, fuel pre-heater, oil level monitoring system and a fuel filter with water separator. Stamford alternator model S4L1D-F, equipped with MX321 voltage regulator.

Super-silenced version, mounted on a GV205 base frame, featuring a specially designed enclosure insulated with rock wool, an integrated 800-liter fuel tank within the base frame and quick couplings for connection to an external auxiliary fuel tank.

Stage V engine:

The engine complies with EU Stage V NRMM standards and integrates innovative technologies, including a flexible Exhaust After-Treatment System (EATS) with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC). These features ensure high performance, making the engine particularly suitable for high-duty applications while significantly reducing emissions. In addition, the engine offers enhanced operational efficiency and contributes to lower operating costs.

HVO compatibility:

The Volvo TAD1382GE engine is compatible with HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), a renewable fuel that offers multiple advantages in terms of engine performance and reliability, while simultaneously reducing environmental impact.

Control unit

Automatic control panel, model InSync 500/ ComAp InteliGen500, designed for parallel operation. Both the control unit and the socket panel are positioned at the rear of the machine for improved accessibility and operational convenience.

Remote monitoring via GSM

The genset is equipped with the WebSupervisorPlus remote monitoring system via GSM connectivity, allowing customers to monitor operational parameters and alarms in real time. This enables immediate intervention when required, including remote start and stop functionality.  Visa’s technical service department maintains continuous remote connectivity to ensure prompt technical support whenever needed.

Special configuration for rental application

Generating sets intended for rental service must be designed and manufactured to provide superior robustness and reliability compared to other applications, as they operate in a wide range of often unpredictable and demanding environments. These machines must ensure optimal performance in extreme climatic conditions and in both industrial and urban settings, where long hours of continuous operation and high resistance to wear are required.

The genset is equipped with the following specific features for the rental sector:

- CE Kit consisting of: four-pole circuit breaker, earth fault relay, protective grills and thermal insulation bands for hot components.
- Murphy Oil Level Indicator: an electromechanical device for monitoring and controlling the engine lubricating oil level.
- Socket Panel Kit: custom-built into the enclosure, comprising IP65 watertight sockets with mechanical and electrical interlocking systems to ensure maximum operational safety.

Baseframe

Dedicated mechanical configuration on a GV205 base frame, specifically designed to accommodate the new Volvo Stage V engine. The generating set is equipped with an 800-liter fuel tank with integrated diesel retention basin, ensuring up to 12 hours of operating autonomy.
Quick fuel couplings between the baseframe and the tank allow connection to an external auxiliary fuel tank.

Special machine features

Assembly and panels construction: particular attention was given to the assembly process, minimizing welding operations as much as possible. All panels are individually painted before assembly, ensuring enhanced corrosion protection and long-term durability.

Innovative enclosure – special series

A newly designed enclosure with innovative features reflects the strong focus on detail and engineering excellence that characterizes Visa’s professionalism in delivering optimal market solutions.

The canopy integrates advanced acoustic engineering solutions designed to meet stringent project requirements for noise emission reduction. The multi-layer treatment of walls and ceiling, combined with high-performance intake and exhaust silencers and an enhanced electronically controlled ventilation system, ensures outstanding soundproofing performance, fully adaptable to specific project needs.

The enclosure design enabled compliance with Directive 2000/14/EC on environmental noise emissions.

This new soundproofed enclosure represents a high-performance solution combining acoustic efficiency, reliability, and long-term durability. Manufactured from galvanized steel and fitted with 50 mm rock wool sound-absorbing panels, it achieves noise attenuation of up to 30 dBA .

The use of non-combustible, anti-corrosion, and water-repellent materials ensures safety and consistent performance even in extreme environmental conditions. The fibrous structure of the rock wool provides excellent sound absorption, effectively reducing noise propagation.

Special canopy with rock wool

To further reduce noise levels, the enclosure structure incorporates:

-Optimized airflow management: additional intake and exhaust airflow panels to further lower noise emissions.
-Double sealing gaskets: contributing to enhanced noise attenuation.
-SCR exhaust system with additional silencer

The result is a technologically advanced enclosure designed to deliver high acoustic comfort, mechanical robustness and extended operational service, enhancing the overall reliability of the genset.

This special canopy has also been designed to maximize accessibility, facilitating routine inspections and maintenance operations.
